Sam was a soldier in the U.S. Army who crossed paths with super-villains and super-heroes a few times.

When Sam was serving in World War II he was stationed at a military base in England. He and his friend (and fellow soldier) Bill watched as Henry Pym (as the super-hero Goliath) fought a giant android made by the villainous Baron Zemo.

Later, Sam was in the United States. The Lords of the Living Lightning attacked an army base that Sam was stationed at. He tried to protect Betty Ross, daughter of army general Thunderbolt Ross. The Lords of the Living Lightning prevailed, however. They were able to invade the base and take Betty hostage. The Hulk eventually thwarted these villains.

Sam was stationed in Vietnam when he and his friend, fellow soldier Willie Lincoln, attened a show that Daredevil put on there for the troops.
