Within the world of Marvel comics, the original "Copperhead" was a pulp magazine hero whose real name was Richard Crandall. The character was created by author Walter Krantz.

Many years later, Krantz was murdered by his own creation: Copperhead. Or so it seemed. It was actually Lawrence Chesney, the son of the man who originally posed for cover paintings of Copperhead. Chesney adopted the Copperhead identity and embarked on a criminal career, which did not exactly imitate the actions of the original pulp action hero.
