Sheldon's sister was a ballet dancer (ballerina). She broke her leg and was unlawfully fired from her job because of her injury.

In order to support her, Sheldon needed money. He was willing to make some nefarious deals. He was in possession of checks which connected crooked mayoral candidate Randolph Cherryh to the Kingpin. Sheldon was willing to turn the checks over to Cherryh's people in exchange for money. But Sheldon also made an effort to turn the checks over to authorities and the Daily Bugle newspaper, to expose the mayoral candidate..
