Max was one of many thugs who worked for the Kingpin. The Kingpin's lieutenant Wilson ordered Max and other thugs to kill Nahum Jenk, a man who was in conflict with his brother Jeremiah Jenk (a counterfeiter and trusted ally of the Kingpin). Max and the other thugs who accompanied tried to accomplish their mission. They succeeded in burning down Nahum Jenk's home, but the super-hero Daredevil prevented them from killing Nahum.

Jeremiah Jenk later went to the Congregation of Righteousness, the church of his youth, which was now led by his brother Nahum, to seek forgiveness.
