When the Hyborian heroine Red Sonja was journeying westward into Nemedia, she entered a forest known as "Darkwood." While in this forest, a stranger named "Ghunthar" asked Red Sonja to carry a brass coffer to a castle that was located within a short distance. En route to the castle, Sonja was able to utilize the contents of the brass coffer to deal with a werewolf, who turned out to be Ghunthar himself.

At least one archival source poses the question as to whether this character first appeared in a prose story written by Robert E. Howard. As far as we know, the character was introduced in a story which was originally written for Marvel Comics by Roy Thomas and which was NOT an adaptation of an existing story by Robert E. Howard, although the protagonist (Red Sonja) was originally created by Howard.
