Rawlins was the lead prosecuting attorney in the murder case against Gilbert Wiles, a scientist who studied the Uni-Power (and its manifestation, Captain Universe). A.I.M. Lombardi, an agent of A.I.M., had killed Wiles' financial backer David Garrett and then framed Wiles for the crime. The fabricated evidence against Wiles was considerable, and Rawlins genuinely believed that Wiles had committed the crime.

Wiles enlisted attorney Matt Murdock (secretly Daredevil) to defend him in the case. Daredevil helped investigate, and eventually Lombardi's role was discovered. Rawlins dropped the case against Wiles after Lombardi confessed to the murder.
