Summary of Hardware #44 (Oct. 1996), from now-defunct webpage at http://milestone.luthor.com/comics_detail.asp?ID=176&:

Donner, Blitzen and Static battle K'lumnii warriors in New York City, while Iota, Payback and Starlight battle Agent Scar of SYSTEM in Montana. Hardware is in the dimension of the K'lumnii and convinces the warriors to take him to their leader. Agent Scar and the Heroes battle while Hardware meets with the K'lumnii king, R'thaal. R'thaal and Hardware agree to a truce. Hardware races to close the portal. Starlight destroys Agent Scar, then Iron Butterfly of the Shadow Cabinet arrives to pick him up. Hardware comes back and has a plan to close the portal. The Heroes finish mopping up the K'lumnii warriors and ther portal is closed with the help of Starlight. The young girl used to make the portal is placed in the care of Man-Machine of Alva House.
