Papa Jaranda is the great-grandfather of Raymond Coker, a neighbor and friend of Jack Russell (Werewolf By Night).

Coker went to Haiti to talk to a Vodoun houngan (priestess) named Jessalla of the Thousand Years. While there, his cousin Banita told him about how Papa Jaranda, who had died thirty-two years before, came from the jungle and took her parents. Jessalla explained that zuvembies (zombies) had returned to Haiti. Papa Jaranda, it seems, had been restored to a semblance of life as a zombie.

It is eventually revealed in Werewolf by Night (vol. 1) #s 40-41 that Dr. Glitternight brought Papa Jaranda back as a zuvembie (zombie).
