Chris Powell (secretly the super-hero Darkhawk) discovered a journal kept by his late father, police officer Mike Powell. In the journal, Chris read about an incident in which his father and his partner, Larry Ratliff, were pursuing criminals who had robbed an all-night gas station on the Lower East Side in New York City. While they were being pursued by Ratliff and Mike Powell, the criminals hit an old lady with the car they were driving.

Ratliff and Mike Powell stopped to help the old lady. Ratliff wanted to continue helping the injured woman, but Powell wanted to go after the criminals.

The journal entry ended without revealing what happened after that.
