Soon after Emma Frost graduated she left home to try to make it on her own. She got fired from her third job in two weeks. She was out of money and desperate.

Eating at a fancy restaurant by herself, she got the bill: $49.45. She didn't have enough money to pay. She used her newly-emerging telepathic powers to cause the waitress (Roxie) to see a piece of newspaper as a $100 bill.

But an observant maitre d' named Vincent noticed the scam. He told Roxie to go back to work. He caught Emma and forced her to wash dishes to pay off her tab.
