The Zyglots first appeared in a three-part comic story titled "The Moderators." The first part of this story was published in Doctor Who Monthly #84. In the next issue, this magazine changed its title to The Official Doctor Who Magazine. The Zyglots first appeared in Part One of "The Moderator" when the villainous bounty hunter known only as "The Moderator" rams his ship through a beautiful Zyglot just for fun, and then proceeds to hunt them some more.

A subspecies of zyglots are known as glots ("glot" is the singular form). One glot which was captured was known as "Polly the Glot," and was the subject of a comic story by that name, in which Ivan Asimoff worked hard to raise money to free it.
