Two races of aliens - the Centaurians and the Polarians - had been at war with each other for a long time. To end the war, each side chose a champion to compete in an "Olympics of Space," which took place on Earth's moon.

The Centaurians abducted Ben Grimm of the Fantastic Four to be their champion. Sandro, commander of the Centaurians, explained this to Ben.

The Polarians chose Monstro, an immensely strong alien warrior who resembled a giant humanoid lizard.

The aliens force Monstro and the Thing to compete against each other in a series of challenges. While this was happening, the remaining members of the Fantastic Four managed to hitch a ride on a rocket heading towards the moon. Once on the moon, Invisible Girl used her power of invisibility to sneak onto the alien ships and switch the keys to their space crafts.

The Thing and Monstro, who turned out to be not really villainous at all but quite reasonable, worked together to shatter the dome over the arena.

The aliens needed to use their ships to escape the area now that the air was draining away, but they didn't have the right keys. Reed Richards told them they must learn to work together in order to exchange keys and save each other.
