A tornado struck Prof. Keen's town, killing most everybody in town, including Prof. Keen himself. According to some reports, lightning concurrently struck his lab, with himself and his son inside.

The many dead were buried in a hurry. Decades later (in 1940), Prof. Keen's son Spencer emerged from the grave. He had not actually died. The effects of the Blue Flame and the storm had put him into a state of suspended animation while imbuing him with super powers, including great strength and the ability to sense evil.
