When Rick Grimes woke up in a hospital after being in a coma for a month and found himself living in a zombie apocalypse, he immediately went to his home. He found that his wife Lori and son Carl were gone. When he heard that in the early days of the zombie apocalypse the government had told people to head to the big cities, Rick assumed that Lori and his son went to Atlanta to stay with Lori's parents.
Rick Grimes headed to Atlanta, only to find the city was completely taken over by zombies. Presumably Lori's parents were among the Atlanta residents who were bitten by zombies and became zombies themselves. Although mentioned in passing, Lori's parents were never shown on-panel.
Lori's parents were first mentioned (in passing, and not by name) when Rick Grimes told Glenn: "We... We're from Kentucky... But when I was told people were ordered to larger cities I figured my wife would have taken my son to her parents place... here in Atlanta... They may not have come... but I don't know where else they'd be."
