In The Walking Dead TV series, Ed Peletier (known simply as "Ed") was the husband of Carol and the father of little Sophia. Ed was physically and verbally abusive to Carol. It was strongly hinted at that he abused Sophia as well.
The other people in the group of zombie apocalypse survivors which Rick Grimes joined up with did not like Ed at all. They had good reason to dislike him. He didn't seen to be nice to anybody.
Not long after Rick Grimes joined the group, Ed was killed by zombies.
In the comic book series, Ed was killed by zombies before his daughter and wife joined up with the others in the small survivor group. Ed does not appear in the comic book series. Based on what his daughter and wife say about him, Sophia misses her father. He may have been much nicer to his daughter in the comic universe than he did in the TV series, where the best that could be said is that he was indifferent to her, and it's possible he abused her.
In The Walking Dead #5, on page 13, Carol was sitting with fellow survivors around a campfire and briefly answered Rick Grimes' question about what she was doing before the zombie apocalypse. This was the first time that details about Ed were revealed.
Speaking about her life with Ed before she met the others, Carol told the group: "Sophia's father was the breadwinner. I sold some Tupperware out of catalogues from time to time but it was reallly just to friends and neighbors. I wouldn't have considered it a job. My husband was a car salesman. They used to say he could talk anyone into anything... He talked me into marrying him... Talked me into staying with him after... ... He watched his parents die right after everything started to happen. He couldn't deal with it. . . He just sort of gave up on life. . . He. . . y'know. After he was. . . gone Sophia and I came here to stay with my sister. . . We figured it'd be worth the drive to stay with someone we know. . . We never got into the city. . . thankfully."
BELOW: Carol's husband gave up on life and apparently committed suicide after the zombie apocalypse began:
