Jacob told the hero: "Yes, after my wife died, I stayed on alone. One by one, the other tenants have moved out when the landlord abandoned the place... Not that I blamed them. No head, no repairs... It hasn't been easy. But I have no money, no family... so I stayed. What else could I do?"
