King Harald, a viking king, came to Hagbard's village. The king wooed Hagbard's daughter Sigrid and left her pregnant with child. Many months after the viking king had sailed away. Sigrid gave birth to a son, Ivar. Hagbard ordered that his illegitimate grandson be abandoned in the wild.

The gods had other plans for Ivar, however. Odin himself protected the boy, who was rescued by Kol the Wise.
