Theseta was a humble servant who had worked loyally for many years for the viking Hagbard and his daughter Sigrid. Theseta helped Sigrid give birth to her baby son, Ivar, who was the son of a viking king who had wooed Sigrid and then sailed away.

Hagbard ordered Theseta to abandon the illegitimate baby in the wilderness. Theseta had no choice but to do so. Hagbard intended for the baby to die. But the baby was protected by the gods, and was rescued by Kol the Wise.
