Federal Agent Steve Carson went undercover as a police rookie. He used his access to collect bullets and other evidence, which he sent to the local crime lab. When he called the police scientist he was working with, the police scientist told him: "Great work, Steve! The bullet which struck the Manning Baby's body-guard when the kid was kidnapped, and which we believe to have been fired from a regulation police revolver, matches the one you sent on! Finger-prints and handwriting identify the letter as having been written by Kate Lane, who has served time on a previous kidnapping charge."
