Spike Spalding's best friend was Pincus, a black boy the same age as Spike. Some modern commentators regard the depiction of Pincus as "racist," but it is worth noting that the character, who also starred in his own feature, was one of the first black protagonists and first black major supporting characters in comic books. Pincus and Spike are treated as equals in the comic stories that feature them. The characters they encounter do not treat Pincus any different than they treat Spike.
