In Nightmask #1 (Nov. 1986), Keith Remsen (in his new dream-walking identity "Nightmask") confronts Dr. Horst Kleinmann within the dreamscape of the assassin who Kleinmann hired to kill Remsen. At the Kleinmann Institute in Zurich, Switzerland, Kleinmann has built a cybernetic interface which allows him to enter the dreams of other people. Nightmask is able to do this with natural ability instilled within by the White Event.

Kleinmann loses the confrontation. In fact, their battle physically injures Kleinmann in the waking world and damages the cybernetic dream interface device that Kleinmann used.

After the battle, the closing scene in this story shows two technicians who work at the Kleinmann Institute. They are talking to each other about recent events, the status of the machine, and the status of Dr. Kleinmann. The life signs of their boss, Dr. Kleinmann, have stabilized. The technicians believe he will recover. The cybernetic dream interface equipment which they help maintain, however, is in a terrible state. The strain from the process of retrieving Dr. Kleinmann from the dreamscape after his battle with Remsen caused the equipment to blow up. The technicians talk to each other about how they know that Dr. Dr. Kleinmann will insist that they rebuild the device, to get it functioning again.
