When the group of paranormals known as D.P.7 was fleeing from the Clinic they stopped in Marinette County. Dave Landers ended up getting arrested by the local sheriff, who accused him of being the "Wompus." The rest of the D.P.7 group investigated, and found out that the "Wompus" was a local legend. Locals believed the Wompus was mutilating cattle. In order to free Dave, the D.P.7 group concocted a hoax in which they paralyzed a cow and woke the farmer who owned the cow, so he would see the "Wompus" (really D.P.7 paranormal Jeff Walters draped with a rug) "attacking" the cow.
The farmer shot at Jeff Walters, who escaped due to his super speed. D.P.7 wanted the farmer to tell people he had seen the Wompus, which would mean that their friend Dave was innocent of being the Wompus. But they actually did something even better, because when Jeff ran away from the farmer he came across local teenagers who were "hunting" and mutilating all kinds of animals, including farm animals, and making up the story of the "Wompus" in order to cover their misdeeds.
