While growing up, Hank McCoy (who would become the mutant super-hero known as "The Beast") did not know he was a mutant. As is often the case with mutants, McCoy's mutant powers did not emerge until puberty.

As a young teenager, Hank McCoy was walking outside in his hometown when a driver (whose name was not identified) almost hit him. Hank instinctively leapt out of the way in order to avoid being hit by the car. This was no ordinary human leap, but an extraordinary super-powered leap. It was with this incident that Hank first realized that he was a mutant. His particular power set included super-human acrobatic abilities and strength, including amazing leaping ability.

This story was first revealed when Hank's memories were forcibly examined by Master Mold, when Hank was held captive by the Sentinels.
