After recent successful battles against the alien Lucifer and his Ultra-Robots, as well as the power-copying Mimic, the X-Men faced a Danger Room test against the gigantic robot Colosso. Professor Xavier was quite satisfied at the performance of his team and granted them an extended vacation.

Bobby Drake (Iceman) and Hank McCoy (Beast) decided to stay in New York City for two weeks, in a hotel right next to Central Park.

After Bobby and Hank went out on a double date with Zelda Kurtzberg and Vera Cantor, Bobby returned to the hotel. The concierge there told Bobby that "Mr. McCoy" had neither returned nor called. Bobby thought this strange, as he thought Hank would be returning there. Bobby left the lobby and concierge, went up to his room, and turned on the television. He saw a news report that said that "Iceman" had been seen in Central Park. He knew that the "Iceman" seen in Central Park must be an imposter, and left to investigate.
