When the Warlock (Merlin Demonspawn) first encountered the X-Men, he had used three flying winged unicorns for transportation. Jean Grey asks him if they were magical. The Warlock answered that they were mutants of his own creation. Evidently they were created through scientific means, such as through genetic engineering or gene splicing or some other technique.
