Ellis is apparently the boatman that Joan Rogers is accustomed to when she spends time with the Drake family (particularly her friend Madge Drake). When Joan saw an unfamiliar boatman (actually Nazi spy Otto), she remarked: "Oh, hello.. I thought you were Ellis.. You must be a new boatman."

Ellis is only mentioned. He does not appear in on-panel.

It is quite likely that Otto and his band of Nazi spies did something untoward to Ellis to get him out of the way.
