Deadpool: Agent of Weapon X LS #1

Synopsis & Review by DaredevilMK. Thanks!

Synopsis: The issue opens with the Director recording a log detailing the current roster of Weapon X agents. Kane is back, with a ton of cybernetic upgrades. He's shown taking out a Colombia drug cartel in South America, while Mesmero (isn't he dead?) uses his powers to force hundreds of soldiers to kill themselves in Bosnia. Sauron's powers have been amplifyed to the point where he can absorb energy from machines (like the Iraqi planes in this issue) and fire bursts of energy. Wild Child's back, too, and he looks like Willem Dafoe in Shadow of the Vampire. He uses his senses to determine which of three men is a spy and tears out his throat with his teeth.

Deadpool's been hired by a mob boss to kill a rival. While waiting for his signal, Sabretooth shows up and “invites” Wade to rejoin the program. Creed even says, “Scream for me,” and the shot looks just like the movie, but funnier.

Creed takes Wade back to Weapon X and he's introduced to the staff. Drs. Duncan and Zira, Special Agent Brent Jackson (recently seen in Wolverine) and the Director. Wade says he doesn't want a part of the program but is restrained by Sabretooth as Dr. Duncan gives him and injection. Te director then chops off ‘Pool's arm with an axe. Moments later, it's grown back, good as new. Better, in fact. When Deadpool removes his mask, his scars are healed completely. The injection will last one hour, but will be permanent with further treatment. Realizing his body parts grow back better and stronger, Wade looks down, grabs the axe and exclaims, “Lorena Bobbit- eat your heart out!” He is stopped and told he can think about their offer.

There's a brief, one page interlude in which a mother tells her son to calm down, but he tells her he can't and the house explodes.

Wade stands on a bridge overlooking a park and spits on some people. His face reverts and he returns to the Weapon X project and accepts their offer.

Review: All in all, a pretty good issue. I've only stared reading Deadpool recently (for the Punisher crossover) and just started picking it up. The cover by Barry Windsor-Smith is amazing. Tieri's Deadpool doesn't take anything seriously, at least on the outside, but when he's thinking about how much he hates his mask and the image inducer (which he uses for some very funny jokes) you can tell he's really tortured. Like I said, a pretty good issue. Best line? “Actually, you find yourself doing a lot of stupid things when you're staking out a hit... like trying to remember the lyrics to the Magilla Gorilla theme song... or wondering why no one has slapped that witch from the Weakest Link yet...”
