Dr. Gordon Doolin (a.k.a. Gordon Heath) thought he was the target of a family curse that had plagued his family generations. The Atom discovered the truth: A criminal named Bates was using machines to fake the appearance of supernatural events which made people think that Dr. Doolin was cursed.

It appears that Dr. Doolin genuinely believed there was an ancient witch's curse affecting the fortunes of him and his family. But after the Atom discovered and apprehended the culprit, Dr. Doolin was able to inherit his family's fortune, much of which he used to continue his charitable work in Third World nations. Dr. Doolin had specifically been looking for funding to build a much-needed hospital in a Third World country.
