Retiring to his secret base, Asteroid M, Magneto had attempted to remove himself from the battle between man and mutant. But then he was sought out by a group of fanatics called the Acolytes led by the extremist fabian Cortez. The Acolytes convinced Magneto to engage in a massive offensive against the human population.
