Celebrated Cases of Judge Dee (or "Dee Goong An") was published in 1949. It is a translation and adaptation by Robert van Gulik of of an actual Chinese detective novel that was first published in the 1800s, written by an unknown author. Robert van Gulik genuinely translated the much older work, making as few changes as possible to render it understandable by modern Western audiences
