The popular "Ogun Bat" character (regarded as Japan's first super-hero) first appeared in Japanese Kamishibai (traveling theatrical shows) prior to World War II. After the war, most Kamishibai disappeared, but the Ogun Bat character was popular enough that he survived this decline.
