Pee-wee Herman Pee-wee Herman lead character
[TV host] HBO Warner Brothers, etc. 42

The "Pee-wee Herman" character was created in 1977 by actor/comedian Paul Reubens (who portrays the character) and fellow comedian Phil Hartman as part of a comedy sketch performed at the improvisational comedy club "The Groundlings." The Los Angeles-based improvisational comedy team staged a performance in which they had the comedians on the team portray characters one might encounter in comedy club. Reubens and Hartman created "Pee-wee Herman" as a character that everybody would immediately realize could never succeed as a stand-up comic.
