This publication is also known as: X-Men #138. Note that the words "The Uncanny" do not appear as part of the cover logo.

The story in this issue begins at the funeral of Jean Grey (who sacrificed herself in the previous issue to prevent herself from causing any further death and destruction as the Dark Phoenix). The story is told from the perspective of Scott Summers (Cyclops) and mostly recounts of his recollection of the history of himself and Jean Grey specifically and the X-Men generally. Nearly all characters listed as appearing in this issue appear in flashback, with the exception of those attending the funeral (who appear both in flashback as well as in the contemporary framing sequence: the funeral).

In attendance at the funeral are, as depicted (left to right) on the page-one splash page, are: the Beast (Hank McCoy, wearing a mask of his non-furry "human" self), Angel (Warren Worthington III), Iceman (Bobby Drake), Cyclops (Scott Summers), Lilandra, Elaine Grey (Jean's mother), Dr. John Grey (Jean's father), an unnamed priest (apparently Episcopalian) conducting the funeral ceremony, Sara Grey-Bailey (Jean's sister), Paul Bailey (Jean's brother-in-law), Storm (Ororo Munroe), Colossus (Piotr Rasputin), Wolverine (Logan) and Professor Charles Xavier. On the very last page we see that Nightcrawler (Kurt Wagner) was also at the funeral, but was hiding in a tree so as not to be seen.

All of the characters who appear at the funeral also appear in the flashback sequence except Jean's parents, sister, and brother-in-law. All of the other characters appear quite prominently in the flashback sequence.

One final character appears on the last page, not in flashback and not at the funeral: The final 4 panels depict Kitty Pryde arriving at the Xavier School by taxi and waiting on the front steps for somebody to arrive (everybody is out attending the funeral). Kitty Pryde also appears briefly in the flashback recounting of X-Men history.
