The earliest known printed version of this nursery rhyme was published in Samuel Arnold's Juvenile Amusements in 1797. The nursery rhyme itself may be much older.

This 1797 version is different from the modern version known throughout the English-speaking world. This version reads as follows:

Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall,
Humpty Dumpty had a great fall.
Four-score Men and Four-score more,
Could not make Humpty Dumpty where he was before.
