The earliest known printed version of the traditional nursery rhyme "Old Mother Hubbard" was published in 1805 in the book The Comic Adventures of Old Mother Hubbard and Her Dog. But the nursery rhyme was apparently known much earlier than then. The version printed in 1805 was one which Sarah Catherine Martin recited. It is possible that she considerably expanded upon an existing nursery rhyme but literary historians generally do not believe she originated the core rhyme herself.
