The earliest known printed version of this nursery rhyme in English appeared in Tommy Thumb's Pretty Song Book, published by John Newbery in around 1744, but the nursery rhyme itself is thought to be much older than this publication. One theory regarding the origin of the nursery rhyme holds that it relates to the supposed destruction of London Bridge by Olaf II of Norway in 1014 (or 1009).
