This was the original pilot episode, filmed from November 27 to mid-December 1964 for the original "Star Trek" series. Post-production work was finished on the episode in early 1965, but the episode bears a 1964 copyright date. The network wanted changes to the series after seeing this episode, and so a new pilot was filmed, and this episode was not actually aired in its original form until 2 decades later (on 24 December 1988), although much of the footage was re-worked and featured in the 2-part "Menagerie" episode later in the first season.
