Fritz the Cat first appeared in homemade comics created in 1959 by R. Crumb and his brother. These were stories the Crumb brothers created for their own amusement. Fritz the Cat did not appear in comics published for a wider audience until the character appeared in the Jan. 1965 issue of Help! magazine. Later (in 1987), R. Crumb's original homemade stories were published by Fantagraphics Books.
