The Skeleton Crew first comes together in this issue. This super-villain team of henchmen and agents of the Red Skull originally consists of Crossbones, Mother Night, The Voice (Jason Lorne Cragg) and Machinesmith, who is using the Fourth Sleeper (referred to simply as "Sleeper") as a body. Other villains will later join the Skeleton Crew: Minister Blood, Blackwing and Jack O'Lantern.

Most of the members of the Skeleton Crew were mercenaries who did not share the Red Skull's Nazi ideology.
