Captain America: "YOU made me remember what was important about this country, Skull-- the dream it was built on, not the deadwood thrown on top! It was you who made me come to grips with the idea that you're no the only enemy that dream has--that not all our foes are diehard Nazis--but it's also you who threatens the dream NOW..."
Other Nazi references. The Red Skull in this issue is very much a Nazi, and is hatching a plot to mark the anniversary of Hitler's death with vengeance on America.

Red Skull (to Captain America): "...to tell you of history--specifically, April 30, 1945! On that date, Adolf Hitler, Mein Fuhrer, was driven to suicide in his bunker! By the thirtieth anniversary of that dark day, the Red Skull shall exact all due vengeance!" [other references to Hitler and this date]

Dave Cox: "Look, Shary! Captain America's back! I hope it's your sister he's here to see, and not the Serpent Squad again!"
Dave Cox here refers to a time that the Serpent Squad (consisting of Viper, The Eel, and Cobra) attacked him and Cap.

Other references. Captain America's rage at the Red Skull for killing Roscoe is a major cause of Cap's attitude this issue.

(pg. 9) Captain America: "--Chopin's Funeral March! My Lord, I haven't heard it since the War-- but that's the symbol the Red Skull used to herald his attacks! Run, Mister! Get away from that car!"
Twice in this issue the Red Skull played Chopin's Funeral March as he murdered victims using Dust of Death.

Falcon: "...didn't you used to have a fiancee, the times I ran into you around S.H.I.E.L.D. headquarters? Name of Carla, somethin' like that?"
Gabe Jones: "Yeah, Carla's right. And yeah, we useta have a thing goin'. .That ended three--no, four years back. And yeah, I'm interested in someone else nowadays, but I haven't told her... yet..."

Peggy Carter (to Red Skull): "What does Nazi stand for again, Hans? 'National Chauvinism'? You're dealing with a qualified S.H.I.E.L.D. agent -- not Betty Grable!"
Red Skull: "But I shall treat you just as I would Betty Grable!" [Red Skull punches Peggy in the face.]
