Clyde was in the area of New York City where a ferocious battle took place between the Silver Surfer and Tyros. This battle was depicted in Fantastic Four (vol. 1) #259.
Years later, the ramifications of that battle in the lives of many ordinary people became evident.
Clyde was a former criminal. He contracted cancer due to the radiation released from the Silver Surfer/Tyros battle. When the Surfer encountered Clyde years later, he was dying. The Silver Surfer used his powers to heal Clyde of his cancer.
Clyde opened up a housing establishment for what had become known as the Ocean Avenu survivors group (those who had been present at that battle).
