Summary
Captured by Roman Centurions, the New Mutants and their new friend Amara are brought to Nova Roma, an incredible Roman city hidden for centuries deep within the interior jungles of Brazil. All of the New Mutants are imprisoned. Senator Marcus Domitius Gallio, who secretly plots to overthrow the democratic government of Nova Roma, has received reports of the amazing powers of the New Mutants, and he plans to use these powers in his bid for power. Senator Lucius Antonius Aquilla (Amara's father) has learned of these mutants as well, however, and foils Senator Gallio's plans by ensuring that Nova Roma's laws regarding turning captured outsiders into slaves is followed. Rahne ("Wolfsbane") and Danielle Moonstar are drugged and prepared for sale in slave auctions. Amara, aware that the wine that she and the other girls are being served is drugged, doesn't drink it, and manages to escape. Unfortunately, while experiencing an intense headache that is a sign of her yet unknown status as a mutant, Amara is captured by Selene, the evil Black Priestess and wife of Senator Gallio. Roberto and Sam are also drugged, and forced to fight as gladiators in the arena of the Julian Circus. After defeating other gladiators, the drugs that the slavers put in their system cause them to briefly fight each other, while a dazed Rahne and Danielle watch as part of the crowd. Seeing Roberto attack Sam, Rahne transforms herself into a wolf and rushes into the center of the arena. The fight, and Rahne's reaction to it, causes them all to break free from the influence of the drugs in their system and come to their senses. Rather than having his legion of archers kill the New Mutants as he had planned to do so if things get out of control, Senator Marcus Domitius Gallio declares to the assembled citizens of Nova Roma that Rahne's red hair and lupine form marks her as a descendant of legendary she-wolf who suckled Romulus and Remus, the founders of Mother Rome. Senator Gallio declares the New Mutants to be children of the immortal gods, welcome in Nova Roma. The crowd cheers for them.
