Maelstrom appears to be a rare case of a regular mortal being becoming an abstract entity (i.e., a cosmic entity, or at least a pseudo-cosmic entity). Maelstrom is identified as an "Avatar of Oblivion." Although this may seem unusual, one may recall that Galactus himself, who is a far more important and powerful cosmic entity (perhaps on par with Oblivion himself) began as a regular mortal.
