Mitch and Beany were the featured non-powered "bad guy" criminals in the story titled "Two-Way Deathtrap!" in Batman #166 (Sep. 1964). Although significant in this story, the pair was never intended to be important or recurring.

Characters such as this who were introduced in 1960s Batman stories rarely appeared in more than one story. Yet in a rare occurrence, these characters were briefly remembered in a few issues later. In "Genius of the Getaway Gimmicks!" in Batman #170 (Mar. 1965), another criminal - the "Getaway Genius" Roy (or Ray) Reynolds recalls the attempt that Beany and Mitch made to trap Batman. This recollection is in panel 4 on page 4 of this story. The trap set by Mitch and Beany is actually shown, with Batman in it, but Mitch and Beany are not mentioned by name. They are referred to by Reynolds as "two more foolhardy crooks who sought to outwit Batman -- and failed!"
