Oscar Farrar was a good friend of nightclub singer Georgia Garrett (played by Doris Day). Oscar Farrar was in love with Georgia, but she was completely uninterested in him in any romantic sense.

Georgia Garrett was working on a cruise ship, posing as socialite Elvira Kent. Oscar Farrar boarded the cruise ship and spent time with Georgia. Private investigator Peter Virgil (who was hired by Elvira's husband to observe her, unaware that he was really observing a stand-in) mistakenly thought that "Elvira" (really Georgia) and Oscar were a romantic couple, and thus he thought he had discovered the identity of Elvira Kent's "secret lover." (Elvira Kent's husband mistakenly believed that his wife was cheating on him.)
