In the first episode of the TV series Hostages, Dr. Ellen Sanders' family is taken hostage by a group of people who want to use threats against her family to pressure her to kill the President of the United States during surgery. Dr. Ellen Sanders' high school student son Jake is one of these hostages.
One complication is that Jake owes a lot of a money to Nico, a drug dealer who supplies him with drugs to sell in high school. Before the family was taken hostage, Jake's father discovered his stash of cash and confiscated it, unaware of the true purpose of the money. (Jake told him it was going to be used to buy beer for a party.)
Nico calls Jake and sends texts to him. The hostage takes are monitoring the phones and other messaging devices that belong to the Sanders family, so they learn about Nico. Jake begs them to not tell his family about his drug dealing activities and the fact that he owes money to Nico. They agree to keep his secret, but use this information as additional leverage to pressure him to go along with their plan and to advice his mother to do so as well.
In the third episode of Hostages, two hostage-takers (Kramer and Sandrine) are keeping an eye on Jake as he walks in the high school parking lot, away from lacrosse practice. Nico and two of his henchmen drive up in a suburban. Nico asks Jake about where his money is. Jake asks for a few more day to pay him back. Nico beats Jake up and tells him to get him his money immediately.
Hostage-taker Kramer, who observed this event, sympathizes with Jake and want to interfere, but Sandrine won't let him, saying it's not their business. Later that night, Nico is on his own and he finds Nico. He beats Nico up and then throws the money owed to him on the ground by his face. Kramer tells Nico to leave Jake alone, that Jake works for him now.
