In the year 2166, Sam was a teenage girl who had just spent 15 years being raised and trained in the National Army Training Academy. Sam's birth name was "Samuel," but she always went by "Sam."
At birth, Sam was taken from her parents, taken to be raised at Base A2.
Although only 15-years-old, and perhaps the youngest and smallest of "Team Legends," Sam was the team's leader. Sam was trained as a "Strategist Combatant," which was one of a number of different areas of expertise in the National Army.
Her team members were: Gavin, Ander, Brady, Ace and Angeal. All of them, like her, had been taken from birth and raised to be soldiers, to be deployed in humanity's battle against zombies.
When Angeal first met Sam, she made some observations about Sam's physical appearance. Excerpt form page 135:
Angeal saw the girl [Sam] who had asked the question, and her expression changed when she noticed that the girl had boy-cut short brown hair and black framed glasses. She had a rifle holder strapped to her back and a pistol on her belt. The girl was wearing the typical Bureau kids' uniform, although it sagged on her tiny body.
