We are introduced to Fred Benton, who is being examined by Alva. Alva has Hardware go with Benton through the portal he creates when he gose to sleep. Hardware finds himself in Metropolis, where he tries to accumulate information for Alva. There Hardware gets his first glimpse of Steel.
