"Dear Abby" is the name of the popular syndicated advise column which was created in 1956 by advice columnist Pauline Phillips.
Pauline Phillips wrote the column under the pen name "Abigail Van Buren," which was a name she made up by combining the name of Biblical figure Abigail in the Book of I Samuel, with the last name of former U.S. President Martin Van Buren.
The column's title was actually "Dear Abbey" (not the spelling difference) when it first appeared.
The column debuted in the San Francisco-based newspaper The San Francisco Chronicle. Later in 1956, it was syndicated to a growing number of newspapers.
