This prose text story is also known as: Volsunga Saga or Saga of the Völsungs.
The Völsunga Saga is a legendary saga. The earliest known written manuscript of the saga is Ny kgl. Saml. 1824b 4to, which is held by the Royal Library of Denmark, and dates to about 1400. The earliest known pictorial representation of this tradition is the Ramsund carving, Sweden, which was created c. 1030 AD. The tradition itself, which was passed down orally is older, and may date to as early as around 500 A.D.
